City Developments Limited Sweeps Wins at the 7th Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards
Singapore, 4 April 2022 – City Developments Limited of Singapore emerged a cut above the rest at the Asian Sustainability Reporting Awards (ASRA) 2021, picking up six awards, including the coveted Sustainability Report of the Year title. The Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards is the most prestigious international recognition for sustainability reporting.
Charoen Pokphand Foods (Thailand) and AU Optronics Corporation (Taiwan) picked up four awards each. Charoen Pokphand Foods picked up one gold, one silver and two bronzes, while AU Optronics picked up two silvers and two bronzes. Singtel (Singapore) and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (Taiwan) won three awards each.
This year, wins were dominated by Taiwan, with an impressive haul of 16 awards in total across categories.
The 2021 ASRA received 585 entries from 14 countries covering 17 award categories. After the preliminary evaluations, 73 companies from 14 countries reached the finals. The intensely contested finals produced 30 winners picking up 51 gold, silver and bronze awards.
Hosted virtually because of the continuing pandemic, the awards ceremony began with the opening address by the Guest of Honour, H.E. Ms Kara Owen, the British High Commissioner to Singapore. It also featured fireside chat sessions with awards judges.
In her opening address, H.E Kara Owen said: “This year’s awards come at an important moment. I’m proud that the UK COP-26 Presidency worked so hard to ensure that the Glasgow Climate Pact took us forward in a way we so desperately needed. The progress in this region was exciting to watch. In 2020, when we took on the task, this was a region of coal users with high growth fuelled by high energy use, and carbon intensity. At the end of COP-26, 75% of South East Asia’s GDP was covered by commitments to reach Net Zero by mid-century. That means that 83% of the region’s emissions should be stopped in the next 30 years.” She explained that sustainability reporting is critical to sharing good practice and building confidence in investors and consumers alike.
Rajesh Chhabara, Managing Director of CSWorks and founder of ASRA, said: “The sustainability reports of our winners at the Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards 2021 demonstrate their commitment to high-quality disclosure about managing material sustainability issues and contributing to sustainable development.”
Winning at the Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards is a significant achievement for companies committed to growing sustainably. He said: “Companies winning at ASRA have demonstrated their leadership in sustainability reporting, transparency, and commitment to creating long-term value for stakeholders.”More than 250 senior business leaders and sustainability practitioners from 16 countries watched a live broadcast from Singapore. Attendees also included dignitaries from academia, embassies, trade associations and advocacy organisations.
ASRA, the most prestigious recognition for sustainability reporting, has continuously raised the bar for quality and authenticity of reporting introducing healthy competition among companies in Asia. The Awards follow a rigorous multi-tier evaluation process, where an independent judging panel determines the finalists and winners. Evaluation involves three assessment rounds to select the very best in each award category. In addition to assessing the report quality, CSRWorks also carries out comprehensive due diligence that considers companies’ reputation among their stakeholders as part of the judging process.
CSRWorks International, a Singapore-based firm focused on sustainability consulting, training and thought leadership, has created the non-profit Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards to inspire all companies to adopt sustainability reporting.
